The Thang

We started off with a new one “Cave Dwellers”. The point is to stay in a low position for the entirety of the routine — don’t recover to your knees or to your feet until the Q calls it or until you have done the specified number of rounds.

Cave Dwellers
• 10 merkins (or other low ground activity, eg. plank, maktar, plank jack)
• Gorilla Crawl ~20 yards (or any low ground traveling exercise)
• 10 mountain climbers (vary exercise to increase or decrease difficulty)
• backwards bear crawl, back to start

repeato x 3 (or however many times the Q desires), remember the point is to stay low and avoid recovering to knees or up to feet until all rounds have been completed.

Mosey over to the hill

Elevens

Start at the bottom of the hill — start with 1 of the first exercise run to the top of the hill and do 10 of the opposing exercise run back down to the bottom, then 2 at the bottom and 9 at the top. Repeat until you are at 10 at the bottom and 1 at the top.

• Hand Release Burpees at the bottom
• Squat Jumps at the top

Walkman admitted this one was particularly challenging and brought him close to the edge of splashing merlot… the pax hustled hard and it showed. This was tough and you wouldn’t think the hand release on those burpees

Head back to the Tennis Court

Cave Dwellers
• 10 merkins (Audible — Hand Release Merkins to make the most of the wet)
• Gorilla Crawl ~20 yards
• 10 Shoulder Taps
• backwards bear crawl, back to start

Reminder of what it takes to be an effective leader:

Vision Articulation Persuasion Exhortation (VAPE)

Having vision is the ability to see that which cannot be seen. Simon Sinek articulates it like this:

Vision is the equivalent of an iceberg — being able to see that which others cannot see because it lies beneath. And when we work with a small group of people who say “I believe what you believe” and you work together and what happens is a little piece of the iceberg starts to show. And a couple more people are opened to the reality of this vision. And a little more iceberg shows up. And you will say… this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Articulation is the effective communication of that vision.

There’s a story about a meeting between FDR and the economist John Maynard Keynes that lasted over an hour despite FDR’s incredibly busy schedule. Some say if FDR understood Keynes approach to economics then the Great Depression might have ended much earlier.

At first blush it’s easy to think this is FDRs fault for not understanding, but in reality we should shift the burden of responsibility from the listener to the explainer.

In this situation the genius locked inside Keynes head might as well not have existed. It was his responsibility to articulate so that his vision was as obvious to FDR as it was to him.

It’s important to note, while we may have a clear understanding of the information we are attempting to articulate if we fail to know the person, we may likely fail to get our ideas across.

Knowing the person transforms your ability to communicate effectively.

It is by knowing the person we are afforded the opportunity to communicate with precision and clarity.

On a personal note

I loved the chatter we’ve had in CoT lately — it’s a product of our good momentum in culture. If you made it this far thank you for reading and keep checking in on your brothers in and out of the gloom.

> What does it take to Lead Right?

• First we must articulate what is a leader?
Leadership is Influencing Movement to Advantage.

• What does it take to be an effective leader?
It requires skill. The skills are: Vision Articulation Persuasion Exhortation (V.A.P.E)

At this point we point out the there is a difference between an effective leader and a virtuous leader. History has shown us many effective leaders who don’t posses the characteristics of virtue. Just look at Hitler — he was a very effective leader, but he did not exemplify virtuosity.

So what are [the] characteristics of a virtuous leader?

Candor, Commitment, Consistency, Contentment, and Courage.

On the flip side of this.. a virtuous leader will not get far if he is not effective.

In order to Lead Right you must be effective AND Virtuous.

> You might have seen this one floating around — I can’t confirm the source but I remember that it struck me the first time I read it:

There’s a Cherokee story about two wolves, and it serves as an excellent parable. It goes something like this:

One evening, an elderly Cherokee brave told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “my son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is good. It is joy, peace love, hope serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”

The grandson though about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied,

“the one that you feed.”

I like to think and I hope what we are doing out in the gloom is feeding the Good Wolf — Buck had a great comment about how not only is this battle happening within ourselves but also we can feed that same spirit in our communities. Great word.

TAPS for Lumbergh’s Aunt Diane and her battle with Cancer.

And TCLAPS to Bunny for showing a high level of commitment. Showing up two straight weeks in a row. Great work and keep at it. I didn’t mention it in the COT but I also wanted to recognize Buckin’ Bobcat and his commitment as well. You’ve shown real commitment and hustle as well — great example for PAX follow. I look forward to both of you leading workouts soon.

That’s all I got to say about that.

PAX: FNG Arthur Burke, Buckin’ Bobcat, Danish, Lumbergh, and Walkman.

CONDITIONS

Nice and wet from heavy rain over the weekend. 55 degrees. You will not ever hear me complain about this weather. Lumbergh showed up early for coupons, again. YHC got a 3 mile run in before the workout, again. Everybody was present, on time, and bright eyed. Ready to go! We had three birthdays to celebrate: Danish 38, YHC 33, and Lumbergh 37. More to come on that later.

Warm Up (Circle of Pain)

There was a little chatter about the launch events that occurred over the weekend. Other than that there wasn’t much mumble leading up to getting things started. All COP exercises were done in cadence unless specified otherwise.

  • SSH x 25
  • Windmills x 15
  • SSH x 20
  • Third Grade Exercises x 15
  • SSH x 15

> THE GROSS (DEJA VU)

We kept it right in the court yard to start the 1st of 4 circuits. Repeat each circuit 4 times. 12 Reps of each exercise.

Circuit 1
Decline Merkins, Lunges, Flutter Kicks
Travel: Frog Jumps across Perform all exercises on the either side. Repeat until you’ve completed the circuit 4 times.

Mosey to the tennis court

Circuit 2 (SAME DEAL)
Curls, Block Squats, Big Bois

I had a feeling there would be some chatter on this one as there was still a good amount of water on the tennis court… the pax did not disappoint. There was much to be said about getting wet. As I always say, “You only get wet once”.

Travel: Rifle Carry — down and back. Perform all exercises on the same side. Repeat until you’ve completed the circuit 4 times.

Mosey to the Hill

Circuit 3 (SAME DEAL)
Release Merkins, Jump Squats, American Hammer

We got our 6 wet… why not just go ahead and balance things out and get the front side too. YHC called for the release merkins. After a demonstration the pax understood, Walkman verbally confirmed. Might as well get the front wet too.

Travel: Bear Crawl the hill. Perform all exercises on the either side. Repeat until you’ve completed the circuit 4 times.

Mosey back to the Tennis Court // We made it to the Tennis Court but we ran out of time to do the last circuit — here’s what was planned anyway.

Circuit 4 (SAME DEAL)
Overhead press, Block Squats, Big Bois
Travel: Rifle Carry. Perform all exercises on the same side. Repeat until you’ve completed the circuit 4 times.

We took off back to the courtyard — with 7 minutes to spare. Lumbergh was picking up the six supporting the FNG throughout his first workout. We don’t leave men behind. This is a great example of how we can support one another no matter the fitness level.

Déjà vu is the feeling that one has lived through the present situation before.

So we repeated today’s workout from Friday on purpose. Not just because it was easier on planning because frankly it was. I also chose to repeat it because I liked it and when you lead you get to choose. But I was also hoping to get through more coupon work so I figured what the heck.

But as I was rewriting the workout and making adjustments I started thinking about deja vu.

Immediately that scene from the matrix comes to mind. Or maybe even Groundhog Day.

That is what my year has felt like. it has been easy to get overwhelmed by the repetitive slog. And it eventually turned to apathy. Brief glimpses of losing hope or even faith.

I understand these moments of pressure have an overwhelming ripple effect causing blindness to Good that is no doubt in proximity to all of us. I also recognize that these are the moments that produce the most growth.

As great (at least some would say great) William Joel once said:

The joy of life is made up of obscure and seemingly mundane victories that give us our own small satisfactions.

And you know, that’s a big part of why I get out of bed everyday. I have Identified my small victories. And I’m practicing the discipline of celebrating these moments.

I can’t control what is happening in the world. But I can make the effort to master my own self. And showing up here choosing to get my ass kicked a little bit a couple days a week is just what I need to keep my eyes open. And to activity look for and celebrate obscurity.

We openly discussed what this means. Walkman affirmed the truth to this as it has applied to his own life and what that will continue to look like as we transition into a Post-Covid Portland Winter. We will all need to continue the discipline of celebrating obscurity.

Welcome to Arthur Burke nicknamed “Bunny” — we kinda scraped the bottom of the barrel on that one but Lumbergh came through. From FNGs favorite movie The Big Lebowski. Welcome and great hustle!

Closing Prayer / Mantra

I begin this day with humility. So that my ears can hear any person as my teacher. And my heart can be spurred to be upright.

I begin this day with thankfulness. So my eyes can see all the good things I have around me. And greed cannot interfere with my ability give away what I’ve learned.

I begin this day with kindness. So while my hands are strong and my will is iron. I have the fortitude to have a gentle touch.

With humility, thankfulness, and kindness as our guide let us recognize our own limitations to shape the world and strive to be masters of our selves.

I ask these things to be a better man. Not for my own gain but for my family, for my friends, and those who are near.

Amen

We also closed out the workout with birthday burpees. Danish, Lumbergh, and I paid the penalty by age.

> I saw this thing someone shared on Twitter and it’s relevant. Because it’s political.

This isn’t to instigate more mellow drama  because that isn’t what we are here for. But now more than ever as leaders in our community we an obligation to be a positive force when it comes to the conversation of politics.

Here’s the note paraphrased:

After the elections are over, your neighbors and family will still be there. Trump will not be ringing up your groceries. Biden won’t be fixing your car. Neither of them will be the ones helping you care for your children or elderly parents or let you borrow tools.

They will both be back in their wealthy political world. And we will be here in ours. They will be doing their thing while you and I live, work, eat, drink, learn, workout, worship, and play together.

We are what makes this country great, because we choose to be decent, loving, caring, and compassionate human beings.

I’m not here to encourage you to vote one way or the other (but I will encourage you to vote). Just remember we are the ones with the ability to shape our communities. Just like this one. Not them.

Last thing to share before we close out is that I wrote this prayer as a mantra for men of faith and no faith to observe as an approach to purposefully setting our minds daily.

From QSource:

Leadership is a skill. And it is one a person must learn and master during their lifetime rather than an attribute of their character with which they are born. As a skill, it is like learning to play the piano. If it were an attribute, it would be like having blue eyes or a square jaw.

Because it is a skill, a person must commit to learning to lead in the same way that they would learn to play the piano. The degree to which they will ultimately master it will depend both upon their natural ability and their willingness to practice.

We are out here practicing what it means to lead.

Because we are all born with some leadership ability, even a man with very little natural skill can still be an effective leader if he is willing to practice hard.

But a man who will not practice at all will never master the skill even if he is born with the heart of a lion.

You have to decide to become an effective leader. Emphasis on effective. Understanding what it takes is a decision you have to make. No one will make it for you.

All that to say this

The Leadership philosophies of F3 are intended to  be an improvement of skills for the benefit of families, workplaces and neighborhoods.

The 4 Quadrants of F3 Leadership

Q1/GET RIGHT: the pursuit of proper personal alignment

Q2/LIVE RIGHT: the dedication to Purposefulness

Candor (Q3.8)

What is it? F3 defines it as Graciously Telling The Hard Truth And Demanding To Hear It From Others.

Dictionary – the quality of being open and honest in expression.

Kim Scott wrote a book called Radical Candor where she describes it as caring personally and challenging directly.

So why even bring it up? what does this have to do with us?

It comes down to truth.

Only hard truths require candor because Easy truths don’t require character. There is no particular virtue in being the bearer of good news.

We are here to get better. Period. Yes to get physically stronger but also to be better leaders.

And in order to be great leaders for our community, we must be able to graciously communicate AND accept these hard truths with one another.

Reminder:

Mission of F3 is the plant, serve, grow small workout groups for the invigoration of male community leadership.

COVID Preparedness

How F3 Portland is making special considerations for workouts during C19.

In-person locations will be taking the following measures to help decrease the likelihood of spreading the virus:

  • We will avoid exercises that require touching bars, coupons, partners, and will generally promote exercises that maintain healthy distance.
  • We will keep at least 10 feet of distance at all times
  • If you aren’t feeling well, think you’ve been exposed, or have a family member who is medically vulnerable, please stay home and join us online instead.

We respect the protections put in place by our government and hope to prevent the spread of disease by doing what is necessary and will continue to check on the phase level for Multnomah County (here) in order to ensure compliance.

Multnomah County is currently in Phase 1 of reopening. There has been a limited reopening of restaurants and bars, personal services, gyms and malls.

Multnomah County is not ready to apply for Phase 2 due to rising case counts and hospitalizations. Latest reopening information

Face coverings are required in Oregon for everyone 5 years or older in indoor public spaces, and also outdoors when you can’t keep 6 feet from others.

Look closely at Vince Lombardi and what do we find?

— Never had a losing season as a head coach

— Transformed the Greenbay Packers who had previously gone 11 straight seasons without a winning record

— In 1948 Lombardi accepted an assistant coaching job at West Point

“As integral as religion was to [Lombardi’s] sense of self, it was not until he reached West Point and combined his spiritual discipline with Blaik’s military discipline that his coaching persona began to take its mature form.” – David Maranes

— Lombardi was 37 years old when his iconic persona began to take form.

— And 47 when he accepted the job for the Greenbay Packers.

Think about your own life. Your own pursuits and ambitions. How old are you? And think critically, what can you accomplish starting today? Don’t let your current status of employement, age, or range of capability limit what defines you. Push yourself everyday toward perfection so that you might “catch excellence”.

Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.

Conditions

We were rolling off a hot weekend and while Portland mornings are never too hot or too cold this one was a bit warmer out of the gate. I rolled up 2 minutes to start after completing a pre-run and set up for post.

Warm Up (Circle of Pain)

Did my usual thing — the guys will start getting tired of it eventually. Thankfully more leaders are coming soon.

There are (at least) two methods of Motivation:

  1. Coercion
  2. Inspiration

Coercion is motivation by force and Inspiration is motivating someone to do something by their own means. We aspire to inspire.
