Remembering that in life we are on mission but it’s often hard to tell how and when we are making the biggest difference. All the more reason to remind ourselves that the most mundane parts of our life may often be where we are making the most difference. We’ve been watching the Mysterious Benedict Society which is about kids on mission in a world going the wrong way. It also gives a fanciful view of reality, which I think helps us remember that the life we are living is pure magic.

Deacon reminded us about the importance of gratitude for the things we have, which helps us not to get obsessed with other addictions to bring us “happiness.”

I shared about taking a solo trip last weekend and how taking time for yourself is important.  As men, we have a tendency to be stoic without taking the time or giving attention to our needs.  Finding time for ourselves, whether a solo road trip or something less significant is important to help us balance the responsibilities of our lives.

Walkman shared his own experience of taking time to himself, a practice of taking long hikes in the woods on a quarterly basis, which he did regularly in previous years but recognized the practice has been lost in his busy life.

I talked about drink driving and how it’s so prevalent in this country. I grew up in the UK where it’s a taboo to ever get in a car after a drink. I brought this up because I just spoke with someone who’s wife had been killed by a drink driver while she was out running. My challenge to this pax is to not be cheap, lazy or dangerous by getting into the car after having been drinking. Get a ride, walk home, or be disciplined enough not to drink to impairment (0.08). This is a life and death consequence that not only affects you but your family and everyone around you.

Thinking ’bout death. I had a very smart student once who would argue with me that we should be pouring more human resources into trying to stop aging and death. I argued that ultimately that would enhance human selfishness. If it was possible to avoid death then we would become very selfish, protecting ourselves at all costs from accidentally dying.

In the movie Dr. Strange the Ancient One says to Dr. Strange that death is what gives life meaning. While I don’t believe this ultimately true, it is true that the certainty of our death gives us an opportunity to live unselfishly with our lives, potentially even giving our life for others.

More Go30 goals were mentioned. Deacon wants to work out 6 times per week. Dad Joke wants to improve the form on his exercise, like Merkins.

Also, we took prayer requests and prayed for people

One of my clients has a company mission statement “Leave it better than you found it”. I’ve found that is a pretty good mission statement for my life. You can leave all you interactions, your company, your family, your city and your country “Better than you found it”. I’ve shared about some of my experiences over the last year about having more of a mission focus at work beyond making as much money as possible.

There was a lot of good discussion about personal mission statements and how they might direct our lives better over the coming year.

In rock climbing, the most dangerous person that can belay you is the intermediate climber.  The beginning climber will check everything thoroughly because they are scared to miss something.  The expert climber will check everything because he has made mistakes and learned what he needs to check.  However, the intermediate climber hasn’t seen the consequences of the mistakes he has made, nor is he nervous enough to frantically check and double-check everything. I am arriving in my career and life in a lot of ways as an intermediate.  I am looking for ways to cultivate a beginner’s mind so that I don’t have to suffer the mistakes and consequences.

Many made good points including slash and walkman about the process as the most important part.  constantly taking on things you aren’t good at but enjoying, helps work that muscle. Also, the value we bring in those intermediate areas is being upfront and honest about our ignorance and blindspots and seeking out resources to support us.

Was a great one, thanks, guys.

Go30 check in. May wasn’t a great month, but we’re making new goals for the end of June. Output is shooting for 2020, Mad Dog is going for 10 merkins each morning.

Output shared about a balloon analogy that was used at a school. The kids wrote their name on a balloon and the whole school threw their balloons in the hall. They were told to find their balloon. No easy task, but then they were told to find someone else’s. Putting ourselves first in all things doesn’t always work. If we help others first, we’ll find that others will help us.

Output prayed for us as well.

G.K. Chesterton says that anything worth doing is worth doing badly. Although it is true that anything worth doing is worth doing well his point is that we shouldn’t be afraid to take risks, try new things, and doing things that we love doing even if we aren’t that good at them. Amateurs “love” what they do.

People also shared prayer requests.

Output and Mad Dog have some heavy things, Fishman has more home duties this week. Ghost wants to move in same direction with wife.

Guest CoT from Tree Trunk.

Tree Trunk shared about efforts to improve communication in his family and at work. It often takes effort that he doesn’t feel like putting in to establish and maintain healthy communication. He has the tools, but doesn’t always feel like using them. But he wants to put in the work because he knows it makes a difference, especially as a man with a big family and lots of kids.

Revolution shared about the difference between peacekeepers (passive) and peacemakers (active)

Deacon shared about communicating well even others aren’t doing a good job of communicating. It is important the we keep good communication even when others aren’t
