COT:

From James Clear’s (Atomic Habits author) 3-2-1 email blast, 10/13/2022

“What appears to be a rapid shift is often preceded by a gradual process. Our results gradually explode or vanish thanks to the small habits we repeat each day.

What radical change are you slowly marching toward? An incremental explosion or an incremental vanishing?”

We commonly hear about “overnight success” but what people don’t see is the hard work put in for years ahead of the boom.

Keep at what your doing. Don’t give up if you don’t have success within the first few months.

I think this is more common for new business conversations, but for me, it’s a bit of a health conversation.

I worked with my former company for almost 8 years. I started taking care of myself better & working out while working there. They noticed, but barely noticed, the changes in my mind & body because of the gradual nature.

Then, I left the company & saw them about 2 years after (moved back home to Portland). They were amazed at how much progress I had made “overnight”.

The last analogy on this topic ice the Iceberg. We only see the tip of the iceberg. We typically do not see the amount of work & effort done below the water surface. It is, however, this effort below the water’s surface that allows the rest of the world to see the tip.

Please keep in mind the results can go both ways due to your habits. All your physical efforts can appear lost shortly after stopping working out or hitting the snooze button more often than not. Your health will take a hit shortly after falling into bad eating habits.

Moleskin:

Worked good starting at a 7 count for Motivators.

Discussed several things picked up throughout various F3 workouts: Motivators (Ohio), Tough Guy Tuesday [#tgt], Pre-Pump Fridays, Rucking [Puget Sound].

“Be Bold, Start Cold”

YHC showed appreciation for those creating positive habits & sticking to them. And how it’s too easy to lose progress & resort back to old, unhealthy ways. Using the group for accountability via simple conversation.

Notice to pay attention to Slack regarding potential weather concerns for Thursdays workout.

Something to consider during this season

While different life stages usually come with new friends, that doesn’t mean you have to leave your beloved old friends behind. There are many ways to continue this life journey side-by-side.

Recently a well know celebrity, tWitch took his life. On the surface he appeared like the Hollywood dream, caught his break, made it into a career, a beautiful loving family, and the world clamoring. An yet, it wasn’t enough to keep him here with us. Today I offer up a couple of ways and approaches to consider your relationships, especially in this season:

  • Invite them into new activities (F3)
  • Stay current and interested in their lives
  • Set aside negative emotions
  • Hold a place for them in your life

Biblical Manliness and Connection to F3’s Mission

Biblical manhood can be boiled down to five basic principles, which each man is expected to conform to. These are

  • 1) Humility before God
  • 2) Control of his desire
  • 3) Protect his family
  • 4) Provide for his family
  • 5) Lead his family

Leadership is a skill that a person must learn and master during their lifetime rather than an attribute of their character with which they are born. As a skill, it is like learning to play the piano. If it were an attribute, it would be like having blue eyes or a square jaw.

Because it is a skill, a person must commit to learning to lead in the same way that they would learn to play the piano. The degree to which they will ultimately master it will depend both upon their natural ability and their willingness to practice. Because we are all born with some leadership ability, even a man with very little natural skill can still be an effective leader if he is willing to practice hard. But a man who will not practice at all will never master the skill even if he is born with the heart of a lion. The decision to become an effective leader is volitional. No one else can make it for you.

F3 was born on January 1, 2011. Its initial purpose was to give men a way to improve their lives by exercising together as part of a workout community. While that worked, we quickly realized that the members of F3 needed more than just physical fitness to improve their lives. They also needed help in mastering their leadership skills. Their families, their workplaces and their neighborhoods were all communities that needed leadership just as much as the F3 workout community did. From this need, F3’s mission of the invigoration of male community leadership evolved.

Recently I went to a church team night for those who serve/volunteer. Our head pastor spoke on Time management, in efforts to help us find ‘more’ time to use towards purpose.

Manage your time for maximum impact

You actually need to enjoy your ever day life. Live with a purpose and meaning. Have healthy relationships with people and God. Right now people are overwhelmed, overworked, and overcommitted. We come up with almost every reason to justify it too. “But you know what excuses do? The kill hopes, dreams, and goals. Eliminate the excuses, and you start to move forward, because you can make excuses or you can make progress, but you can’t make both.”

Tool:

Calendar your big rocks first. If you start with your biggest priorities, it gets your best you, there is always a place for the littler things once you tackle these but not alternatively.

Teacher analogy: Place sand into jar, followed by smallest rocks, then slightly bigger rocks, then larger, finally three big rocks. There is no room for them. If you flip the script, start with the big rocks and work your way back thru the list, everything fits. Consider this application in your life, equating those rocks to your goals/priorities/people and see how your life can change!

Focus on gratitude

Spoke into the meaning of our 3F’s, with specific focus on our 3rd F Faith. We spoke about what that means to each us, whether it’s your relationship with Christ or simply thinking outside yourself for the betterment of others. We then went around and each PAX shared something beside themselves, that they are grateful for this past week.

Queen

AO: Lightning Rod

QIC: Walkman

PAX: Ghost, Kiwi, Danish, Free Lunch, Stray Cat

Conditions

58F and a bit overcast, nice and cool for a sweaty beatdown. Danish had to make a run for the Port O’ Potty but met us at the Tennis courts just in time for the Thang.

Warm up

Windmill x 10

Slow High Knees x 10

Third Grade Exercise x 10

Imperial Walker x 10

Mosie to the corner and did burpee/box jump/merkin combo’s OYO, sets of 10, 8, 6.

Mosied to the tennis court.

The Thang

We paired up and while one person ran a leg of a gasser, the other would perform an exercise. Upon return, they’d switch, and the next person would run one line further on the tennis court. This continued all the way down and back for a total of 7 Gassers per exercise. Completed:

Bonnie Blairs

Merkins

Big Bois

Switched it up and the ‘gasser’. became a lunge walk while partners held plank. This one was long and slow and hard and the Pax pushed to finish in time! Good form demo by Free Lunch as we all learned how to swing our opposite arm up for lunges.

COT

We discussed the concept of ‘Queen’ and how it’s impossible to out ‘King’ it. Building good diet habits take time, and requires laying individual bricks. Free Lunch shared his concept of ‘raising the floor’, which is a great perspective to have around building habits that stick. Cheat days, setting a standard and setting up some sort of feedback loops (lb’s are easy at first) are critical as well.

Great work everyone – Walkman.

6/23/2021 – Breathe in….

AO: Lightning Rod

QIC: Walkman

PAX: Danish, Giggles, Kiwi, Samurai, Beach Bum, Quads, Ghost

Conditions

A balmy 65 as YHC made it just in time due to some gastrointestinal distress.

Warm up

We started with an eleven minute guided Wim Hof breathing exercise. Then we Bear Crawl Batoned to the tennis courts. This is a six man run where everyone is bear crawling, and the last person stops to do 5 burpees before running to the front of the bear crawl train. I blame beach bum for bringing this into our local exicon.

The Thang

We split into two groups on each side of the tennis court. We fish boned our way down and back. Completed a set of cave dwellers (gorilla walk or bear crawl with 5,10,15, and 20 merkins at each court, no standing up) on the way down and on the way back Frog Jumped with (3) squat jumps at each line. YHC had initially though of 5/10/15/20 squat jumps but it runs out (3) was plenty! Then completed another set of high intensity fish bones down and back. Mosied slowly back to the rod as we caught our breath.

Mosey to LR

Completed another 11 minute guided Wim Hof breathing exercise.

COT

I shared that I had been in Denver the weekend before, attending the memorial of my friend who took his own life recently, Tom Zimmer. We also helped clean out his house alongside his family. It was an intense, emotional, and hard weekend that was cathartic for many. At the memorial, many people shared stories and perspective on Tom. One thing stood out to me that I wanted to share with the PAX. Tom worked with a guy named Townsend Warlod (one of the coolest names ever yea?) in a program built around creating your exceptional life. Townsend learned of Tom’s death and reached out to his parents, and shared with them a ‘Declaration’ that Tom had written, affirming himself and his unique talents/perspective. It was shared openly at the Memorial and was title ‘On Becoming Tom Zimmer.’ It was deeply moving, and while I don’t feel comfortable reposting it online, I will share my two favorite take aways as I did in the CoT:

  • No one should be expected to know exactly what I want or need. So tell them.
  • I don’t owe a long term duty to what doesn’t serve me.

Big thanks to the PAX for letting me share something deeply personal and moving, loved the support.

6.7.21 – Fit and Friended Men look outward

AO: Lightning Rod

QIC: Walkman

PAX: Danish, Bunny, Giggles, Ghost, Kiwi

Conditions

Light overcast and 49 degrees as six Pax showed up right on time to kick things off. YHC was coming off a week away and botched the disclaimer a bit on our way to a mosy.

Warm up

Mosied down to 62nd and looked for ‘Good Morning Merkins.’ Bunny was confident in his first ‘Good Morning’ and was rewarded when some random guy down the street hollered back, as well as his intended target. Pax completed 20 merkins on the Mosy and stopped into the tennis courts for Slow high knees x 12, Gradycorns x 12, Windmill x 12, Merkins x 11 (HC). In between each movement we ran (60-80% pace) to the end of the courts and back. Then mosied to the hill

The Thang

Need a name for this type of workout…the pax lined up single file at the bottom of the hill and all held plank. The first person in line ran up the hill, completed 10 merkins, and bear crawled back down and then held squat until the last man was in. When the first man was done with the merkins, the second person in line followed suit, repeating until the entire line was reformed at the bottom of the hill, all holding squat. Then the first person ran up, completed 10 squat jumps, and ran back down, forming a new line holding plank. When the first man’s squat jumps were completed, the second person followed suit, and repeated until the PAX was back to the original line. We repeated this sequence 6 times before heading back to the LR.

Fit and Friended Men look outward

I found this quote from ‘Freed to Lead’ incredibly valuable over the last month or so. I saw evidence of it in myself over the last year, and the pax opened up and shared some perspective on how it applied outside of fitness and into our marriages, children, and the mentality of abundance. We shared that when F3 first started several people came up with ‘pet projects’ that were initially considered distractions – helping a charity, building homes, etc. But it turned out these ‘distractions’ were the result of the men being fit and friended, and they ended up becoming the goal of F3 – to reinvigorate male leadership in communities. As our pax grows, we’ll begin to see these ‘pet projects’ and YHC highly encourages us to embrace them as strong second and third F opportunities.

Great work today – Walkman
